The Inspiration: Ulexite, the TV Stone
When I was thinking of a name, I remembered something from my childhood: a stone known as the “TV Stone.” The actual name of the stone is Ulexite, and what makes it fascinating is that it transmits images clearly through its fibers, almost like a natural fiber-optic cable. When you place Ulexite on top of an image or text, it projects that image onto the surface of the stone, as if the image itself is transmitted without distortion.
That childhood memory of the TV Stone stuck with me. Little did I know, it would come back into my life and become the foundation for the name of my company. The way Ulexite transmits an image perfectly is the exact opposite of a phenomenon we’re all familiar with: the telephone game.
The Telephone Game Analogy: Where Data Goes Wrong
Remember playing the telephone game as a kid? The teacher would whisper a word into one child’s ear, and by the time it made its way through the line of students, the word was entirely different and usually hilarious. It was a game about how communication can change as it passes through people.
Unfortunately, I’ve seen the telephone game happen in the world of data, too. Data can start off clean and accurate, but as it moves between systems and departments, it loses its true meaning. This loss of data integrity is a significant problem for companies trying to make data-driven decisions.
